What Feature Democracy actually is (and what it isn’t yet)

We have talked about Feature Democracy for a while. This is the plain version: what it is, how it works, and which parts are not running yet.

The idea

Most software gets built from a road map you never see until it’s actually “in product”. Someone decides what comes next, and customers find out when it ships. At times, the biggest and most lucrative customers get a say so (and probably finance it as well), but what about everyone else? In a democracy, everyone regardless of size or circumstance get a vote.

Feature Democracy is what delivers that. The people who use Backshack suggest what we should build next by voting in a given voting cycle on their feature of choice. Every active subscriber can vote. The idea that wins is the one we build.

How it works

  1. Active subscribers submit a use case: a job they want done that can drastically improve the speed, effectiveness or accuracy using AI, described in plain words.
  2. Active subscribers vote on the ideas in that voting period.
  3. When the cycle closes, we publish the results. Then the work begins.
  4. The person who submitted the winning idea gets lifetime access to that tool once it’s built.

That last step is deliberate. If you suggested it, other subscribers will benefit from it so you get access to it… for good. Full stop.

What it isn’t yet

  • No cycle is open right now. Nobody is voting today and nothing has been won. We are still in private beta while our early-access-wait list users help us to get the platform ready for YOU. When the first cycle opens, you will hear about it!
  • Voting happens inside the product, and only for active subscribers. That includes trial and early-access.
